Germany's anti-MMA debate (186 Words)

MMA is being debated in Germany because minors need to be protected rofl

The paper reveals that the upcoming Munich Media Days will feature a panel on October 14th called ‘When Sport Is Close To Murder: Cage Fights - A Case For Protecting Minors?"

The UFC, rightfully, is upset, not just by the inclusion of this topic in a conference that primarily focuses on other less controversial subject matters, but also by their exclusion from the debate. The European head of the UFC, Marshall Zelaznik, sent a letter yesterday to event organizer Wolf-Dieter Ring complaining about the inflammatory title of the event and the UFC's inability to present a counter argument.

While the UFC may not be officially represented in the debate, the article in Süddeutsche Zeitung reveals that Oliver Copp will represent Fighters Only at the event. Copp, in addition to these editorial duties, is also the German announcer for the UFC in Germany. Although not officially there on Zuffa's behest, Copp will surely have the power of Zuffa behind him.

170th Eastern Kings Exhibition (September 17th, 18th & 19th) (331 Words)

The Eastern Kings Exhibition, is in it’s 170th year, which gives it the distinction of being the oldest exhibition on the Island and the second oldest in Canada.

The exhibition is being held September 17th to 19th at the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris, admission $5, children under 12 free. This historical event is attracting many Island politicians and dignitaries, including the Lieutenant Governor, to the grand opening and cake cutting Saturday at 11am.

The big news this year is that the PEI Youth Talent Search on Saturday has a top prize of $300 and only a $5 entry fee. The Youth Talent Search is open to all youth ages 13 to 21, who can compete as vocal, instrumental, dance, or a variety performance as individuals or part of a group. Another big crowd draw is the Seafood Chowder Challenge also held on Saturday. The chowder features Island seafood, potato and milk products which are provided for the competitors, with no cost to enter. The public will have an opportunity to sample the chowders along with other homemade food while enjoying local musical entertainers.

Upstairs the Red Clay Quilt Guild is hosting the largest quilt show on the Island, showcasing 170 unique and expertly made quilts. A live auction and silent auction will round out the day on Saturday.

All the animal shows have been moved the Sunday this year. This includes the poultry show, light horse and pony show, heavy horse show and the big crowd pleaser – the horse pulls.

To participate by setting up a booth for your business or crafts, volunteering, or entering your own homemade and homegrown products for prize money call the exhibition at 687 2323 or email easternkingsexhibition@gmail.com.

This is probably a stupid question but I'll ask it anyways. I am originally from Vancouver Island and this is my first summer here. I've noticed it is very humid. For the first time in my life I am thinking of buying a dehumidifier for the basement. My question is...why is it humid on the east coast, but not the west coast? Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast are nothing like this. Anyways, If anyone has an explanation that will satisfy my curiosity then thank you in advance!...

Back Beat Fridays - Aug 20th @ Nightcap (208 Words)

This is the first of what will hopefully turn into a once a month or so event.
It's upstairs at Nightcap. (above hunters)

I'm going to be your party engineer for the night, playing hits of the 50's and 60's, with a few 70's disco gems.
The biggest thing I want to make clear is that there will be no remixes or edits or dance versions of the songs. All original versions.

People are strongly encouraged to dress up for this event. Ladies in dresses and skirts. Fellas in dress pants and hats.

You'll hear hits from...
'Jackson 5 / Aretha Franklin / The Beach Boys / Little Richard / The Temptations / The Four Tops / The Turtles / The Zombies / The Bee Gees / The Monkees / Martha & The Vandellas / and many more...'

Even though I have a fairly epic set already to go, if anyone has any suggestions or requests, please feel free to let me know.

I am thinking about maybe having a dance/outfit competition, if people feel like it'd be something they'd be into.

Also, thanks to KyleM for the wicked poster....

Fries with the Works - History and Who makes the best? (411 Words)

Hi

Not sure if this belongs in restaurant reviews or not. If it has to be moved - I won't be offended <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" />

I had friends from Ontario and Manitoba come visit the Island for the first time and the first thing they want to try was a Fries with the Works (FWTW) so off we went to try the one I feel is the best I have had. I met these people in Cuba and one night late in the week I guess I mentioned I couldn't wait to get back home to have a FWTW.
I took them to the St. Eleanors Dairy Bar in Summerside. They make a great FWTW for a great price. it comes with great fries, lots of hamburger, peas, and fries onions...and the dark beef gravy is good enough to order as a drink! For $5.25 (special) it also comes with a bun and small coleslaw. For an extra $1.70 you can really beef this baby up with an extra patty.
As we are sitting there waiting for our orders (All FWTW) we got into a discussion of whether this was an PEI creation and one of the waitresses confirmed the same story I heard a few years ago. This story stated that the first FWTW was ordered at Pat's Takeout in Alberton PEI by a guy that usually ordered a hamburger and fries. One day he tells the waitress to have the hamburger broken up, add peas, put over the fries and drown with gravy. I believe Pat's Takeout is now G & E at the same location?
So our FWTW was delivered to the table and the FWTW newbies didn't think they could eat it all...but they dove in and really enjoyed it...some finishing and some not. Later that same week we ended up stopping at another location in Kensington on the way home from the beach and we all tried the FWTW there and it was pretty good but for $6.99 it didn't come with a bun or coleslaw, and the gravy was just not as tasty.

So, this brings me to my questions.
1. Anyone hear a similar or different story about the history of FWTW?
2. Which spot makes your favorite FWTW?
3. Why is it your favorite FWTW?

Stay hungry my friends......

Advice organizing a medium-large scale picnic. (283 Words)

Hello PEI!

Since I've never organized anything such as this I want to do a little research before I start much actual planning. I figured this would be a great place to ask for help!

Here's what the idea, this won't be simply be a plain old picnic. This will be a cosplay picnic. For those not in the know, cosplay is short for costume play. Basically you dress up as your favorite TV, movie, video game, anime, comic, etc. character. Usually these costumes are far more detailed than your run of the mill Halloween costume. Most put a lot of time, effort, and money in to making them. What I'm looking to plan is a social event for all ages, though considering the nature of it there will likely be a majority teen/early twenties crowd. The main thing I want to look in to now is a location. There was one held in Moncton last weekend in Victoria Park. It's outdoor amphitheatre made it an idea location as it could allow people to preform skits in character if they so desired. Being a country boy I'm not all that knowledgeable of all the parks in Charlottetown. Victoria Park and Confederation Landing are two that pop in to the top of my head. Any other suggestions? I'd like to check them out then see about getting permission to hold the event.
Thanks for any help!...

People certainly take notice of them out in public!

Scientists fear MMR link to autism (154 Words)

New American research shows that there could be a link between the controversial MMR triple vaccine and autism and bowel disease in children.
The study appears to confirm the findings of British doctor Andrew Wakefield, who caused a storm in 1998 by suggesting a possible link.
Now a team from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina are examining 275 children with regressive autism and bowel disease - and of the 82 tested so far, 70 prove positive for the measles virus.
Last night the team's leader, Dr Stephen Walker, said: 'Of the handful of results we have in so far, all are vaccine strain and none are wild measles.
This research proves that in the gastrointestinal tract of a number of children who have been diagnosed with regressive autism, there is evidence of measles virus.

The $35 Laptop (283 Words)

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India has come up with a 35-dollar touch-screen "laptop" -- a computing prototype that it aims to make available to students from elementary schools to universities.

The gadget, developed by the elite Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, is part of a push to give students a better education and technical skills needed to boost India's economic growth.

The first users are expected to be university students with introduction of the Linux-based computing device targeted for next year.

The ministry is going to install broadband Internet at all of its 22,000 colleges so students can use the 1,500-rupee (35-dollar) device, government spokeswoman Mamta Verma told AFP on Friday in New Delhi.

The tablet gadget, which can be run on solar power, is equipped with an Internet browser, video-conferencing capability and a media player, among other facilities.

"This is part of the national initiative to take forward inclusive education," Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters on Thursday.

"The solutions for tomorrow will emerge from India," he said.

Sibal said the cost of the motherboard, chip, processing and other components cost a total of around 35 dollars but the government may subsidise 50 percent of the price for students.

Sibal said the government, which hopes the cost of the device can eventually fall to 10 dollars, is in discussions with global manufacturers to start mass production of the device.

India, whose 63 percent literacy rate lags far behind many other developing nations, such as China with 94 percent, is making efforts to improve its troubled education system, which lacks investment in schools and teachers.

I read the book and liked it. So I decided to take a chance on the movie rental even though I generally don't enjoy sub-titles in movies. I thought it was really good and after a while I forgot that I was reading subtitles. For once it was nice to see a movie without any recognizable actors. Sometimes it's hard to forget that a character is really Mel Gibson or Jennifer Aniston. I also thought they used lighting really well in this movie, and the actress who played Lizbeth was very good. The pacing was nice too. Just enough to keep the story moving along nicely while creating suspense. Out of 10 I would give it an 8.5 and I think most people will get past the subtitles very quickly....

burn audio CD with WMP11; create CD case cover (106 Words)

I haven't burned audio CD's in quite a while and have since purchased a new computer so I don't have my old software.

Anyway, my mother wants me to make a CD for her from a few songs of her favorite CD's and I was looking at Windows Media Player 11 to rip the songs as WAV files and burn the new CD.

However, I don't see a way to make a jewel case cover with the song info. Is this available in WMP 11?

I used to use Roxio and then Nero and this always seemed automatic.

Thanks for any help....
