Hello! I am doing a paper for Technical Writing (eng381) on the Reintroduction of a UPEI Campus Radio. For the paper, I require a survey of student opinions and thoughts on that subject. I hope this forum is alright with me posting this survey here as I'm looking to get a wide range of viewpoints on the matter. The idea for the paper came from what seems to be a lack of a centralized information source for students on campus. The latest attempt at this kind of set up, the Radio@UPEI digital station, did fine for itself but still could not convey the information to the student population that a traditional analog station would be able to do. The last time we had such a station was in the early 90s and ceased to function after the SU Barn was taken down. With the reintroduction of a campus radio, a lot of the efforts of getting news and event information out there that is currently used (Panther Post, fliers/posters, the LCDs in various buildings, etc.) could be centralized in a radio station and thus more rapidly presented. If you are a current UPEI student or are becoming one in the fall, it would be much appreciated if you could take a quick moment to answer these questions. You can post the replies here or email them to me at arstpierre@gmail.comThanks in advance! ----------------- Reintroduction of UPEI Campus Radio Q: 1) Would you be in favor of a student-run radio broadcast on campus? -Yes -No 2) If there were to be a campus radio station, what would you most prefer to hear? (Please choose up to two) -Music -News & Events -Comedy programming -Sports Information -Debate & Investigative programming -Other (please state in reply): _______________ 3) For music programming, what music would you most like to hear? -"Mainstream" radio music (similar to Ocean, K-Rock, etc.) -Alternative -Independent groups from PEI -Classical/Jazz -Other (please state in reply): _____________ 4) Would you be more inclined to listen to a campus radio for the music or "talk" programming (like news, debates, etc.) -Music -Other programming 5) Would you be willing to make a donation of at least $5 to get the campus radio running/maintain it -Yes -No 6) Should a campus radio attempt to work closely with the Student Council/Newspapers or should it attempt to maintain a more objective or independent stance? 7) Do you have any other suggestions or issues with a campus-wide radio broadcast?

Just a suggestion, use a free online survey service like Surveymonkey. It is easier to get results and to analyze them

[quote="ARStpierre"]Reintroduction of UPEI Campus Radio
Q:
1) Would you be in favor of a student-run radio broadcast on campus? -Yes
2) If there were to be a campus radio station, what would you most prefer to hear? (Please choose up to two) -Music -News & Events
3) For music programming, what music would you most like to hear? -Alternative
4) Would you be more inclined to listen to a campus radio for the music or "talk" programming (like news, debates, etc.) -Music
5) Would you be willing to make a donation of at least $5 to get the campus radio running/maintain it -Yes
6) Should a campus radio attempt to work closely with the Student Council/Newspapers or should it attempt to maintain a more objective or independent stance? It should definitely work closely with the Student Union and newspaper. Otherwise it won't succeed.
7) Do you have any other suggestions or issues with a campus-wide radio broadcast? -It would be great if CIMN was brought back, but it would be very difficult. I'm not sure a campus-wide radio station would work at UPEI. I would definitely suggest avoiding playing mainstream music as that shouldn't be the point of a campus radio station. Focus on local, regional, and national acts of all genres. I'll be interested to hear what happens with this. Keep us posted!

Q:
1) Would you be in favor of a student-run radio broadcast on campus? Yes
2) If there were to be a campus radio station, what would you most prefer to hear? (Please choose up to two) -Music -News & Events
3) For music programming, what music would you most like to hear? -Independent groups from PEI
4) Would you be more inclined to listen to a campus radio for the music or "talk" programming (like news, debates, etc.) To be honest, I would listen for either. But if you need one answer, music.
5) Would you be willing to make a donation of at least $5 to get the campus radio running/maintain it -Yes
6) Should a campus radio attempt to work closely with the Student Council/Newspapers or should it attempt to maintain a more objective or independent stance? I think SC and the paper would help the radio get a solid start.
7) Do you have any other suggestions or issues with a campus-wide radio broadcast? I think a good combination of local music and talk programs would be good. I would definitely listen to it.

1) Would you be in favor of a student-run radio broadcast on campus? -Yes (definitely!) 2) If there were to be a campus radio station, what would you most prefer to hear? (Please choose up to two) -News & Events -Debate & Investigative programming -(my third would be Music) 3) For music programming, what music would you most like to hear? -Alternative -Independent groups from PEI -Classical/Jazz -Folk music (local) 4) Would you be more inclined to listen to a campus radio for the music or "talk" programming (like news, debates, etc.) -Other programming (there are plenty of Music stations - the student doesn't often get their information needs represented in the general media, so it would be nice to have a Student Radio station that provided analysis of the world for the Student perspective). 5) Would you be willing to make a donation of at least $5 to get the campus radio running/maintain it? -Yes, and maybe 10 or 20 (depending on how it's being run). 6) Should a campus radio attempt to work closely with the Student Council/Newspapers or should it attempt to maintain a more objective or independent stance? - The "short" answer is "Both": - They should, ideally, be independently managed and operated. As you said, this allows for that all-important "independent and objective stance", which should ALWAYS be the already-established framework for ANY truly impartial NEWS REPORTER (don't take your leads from the corporate-and-interest-run media outlets!!!). - They should, however, also work closely together to ensure that they are both covering the stories that their Audience (which you're hopefully learning about as a fundamental concept in your Technical Writing course) wants to have covered. That is, if there's a big story about UPEI raising its tuition rates, your Audience will likely consider this to be very important and would like you to provide them with as much coverage as you can in all of the available news channels. So, both the Radio and Newspaper will likely (or should be) be covering them, without any go-ahead from each other. If both the Radio and Student Newspaper are putting their energies into providing good reporting, they should both naturally be covering those things that they know their Audience will be interested in. In the end, the radio and newspaper should be independently-managed and operated (to preserve perspective and freedom of commentary), but should BOTH be dedicated to serving the information needs of their Audience (which, if the dedication is there, should ensure that the "big stories" are independently and accurately covered). 7) Do you have any other suggestions or issues with a campus-wide radio broadcast? - Yes: make it a not-for-profit Media operation, and so avoid serving whatever interest will bring in more money. In today's world, there are very few truly impartial news services, as they all need to serve the needs of advertisers or political leanings or whatever (which prevent them from simply reporting the facts, or from being free to provide an honest and impartial analysis OF those facts). A student radio station should adhere to the ideals of Good Reporting, and make that its entire focus (where its not playing music ) and leave the Good Business to the rest of the profit-making world. There are far too many new agencies with profit and business as their primary focus - set something up that does things as they SHOULD be done. Thanks for the survey, it's nice to be given an opportunity to rant and rave about the Media. And good luck with your course!

1) Would you be in favor of a student-run radio broadcast on campus?
-In theory, yes. In practice, NO. It has failed many times over, and the medium has become increasingly irrelevant in this day of on-demand entertainment and social networking.
2) If there were to be a campus radio station, what would you most prefer to hear? (Please choose up to two)
- The only thing that matters for a local audience is local content.
3) For music programming, what music would you most like to hear?
- LOCAL.
4) Would you be more inclined to listen to a campus radio for the music or "talk" programming (like news, debates, etc.)
- It doesn't really matter what it is as long as it's something that other outlets cannot provide, ie. local content specific to UPEI and the surrounding community. It was always entertaining reading the Cadre's reporting on world events, but terribly irrelevant and without journalistic authority.
5) Would you be willing to make a donation of at least $5 to get the campus radio running/maintain it
-Maybe, even though it will likely never happen, and the amount would have to be at least triple what you are suggesting.
6) Should a campus radio attempt to work closely with the Student Council/Newspapers or should it attempt to maintain a more objective or independent stance?
- Sadly it seems the only group with enough with enough continuity on campus to operate such an endeavor year in and year out is the Student Union. Unfortunately, they have a track record of utter failure when it comes to student media on campus. I highly doubt they are interested in running a campus radio station at this point. They sure weren't interested in supporting Radio@UPEI.
7) Do you have any other suggestions or issues with a campus-wide radio broadcast?
Don't bother. If you think I lack the credibility to say this, get in touch.
