Am I the only person who is incredibly unexcited about the prospect of a Costco coming?

How much milk do you have to drink in a year to save $1500 after travel costs...yikes.

I like options. That's all. Plus Costco being willing to be here means other retailers might consider us when previously they wouldn't.

Not the only one. I've been doing very well without a Costco.
A little bit of smart shopping and I am able to buy my weekly groceries at better prices than an visit to Costco.

They may carry a few brands or products that we don't have here but up until now I haven't found myself wanting for anything not already provided here by Superstore, Sobeys and NoFrills.

I do find myself wanting for more choice and better selection every time I leave the Island and come back to local shopping. When I am here for long stretches of time, like the frog in hot water, you get used to limited store offerings. Whether it is beer, condoms, tomatoes, mints, shirts .. with just about anything we seem to have more limited choice than other places that call themselves "cities". I hope that any new store could force existing stores to behave in more competitive way with their ordering and re-stocking.

I travel quite a bit. Rarely do I bring things home that I can't find here.
Very occasionally I'll buy some wine or rum that you can't buy here but I haven't seen anything else we don't have access to.

I've never been inside Costco, but my daughter brought me back a huge jar of garlic stuffed olives! Perhaps I can buy the big jars here, but I've never seen them - I can eat one of the little jars in no time. :D

I'd never drive to Moncton to just go there, but I'd likely check it out if they were here.

I suppose different people have different tastes - there is no arguing there. The point is that there are people other than you with tastes different than yours who are not too happy with selections offered by local stores.

I'm well aware of that. I'm just curious as to what Costco offers that we cannot get here. I've been there and pretty much left empty handed because I can get the same or better product here for as good of a price.

If a huge condom selection is your great concern then I guess it's worth the trip to Moncton.

I do not see why I cannot post on this board without you calling me out. I respect the fact that you find everything you need in local stores. Can you accept the fact that I do not.

More stores = more competition = more choices.

For an example, I would not shop in Walmart myself but I am all for having that store here as some people like it and again, more stores = more competition = more choices.

So, even if you cannot find anything you like in Costco, some people that live around you, might.

<edit>
With condoms, i was referring to Shoppers. Halifax one has way more choices than local ones.

Will not make one ounce of difference to me at all. I don't shop enough in the run of a year to make it count.

Well, you can't find 32 packs of orville redin backers pop corn for $8.99, 24 packs of the larger bars of ivory soap for $3.89. Harmony one remote for $49, dremel tool for $24.99, electronics usually run ten percent or more less than other stores and costco adds an extra year of in house warranty on top of the manufacturer's for free. We go about once every 5 to 7 weeks and find lots of items that are far cheaper than in a regular grocer, especially for produce and frozen foods. If there were a costco here I would likely spend about 80% of my purchase dollar there if not even more.

Pretty skeptical about that comment.
I do my research thoroughly when I buy electronics and I have never seen a better deal than I can get here if I'm willing to wait a week or two for a sale.

Flour and maple syrup are two products that come to mind. Yes you can get them here, but the savings you can get a Costco will cover the cost of the membership over the course of the year.

Here we go again....."Costco coming to PEI" must be, by far, the most talked about hearsay on this forum.

I too am curious as to how you save $1500 a year on milk. Either a typo or shoddy reporting (would you not fact check a ridiculous claim like that?) Unless the woman in the article owns a restaurant or a day care or something.

You'd be SAVING over $4 a day on milk to achieve that, meaning you are spending a hell of a lot per day normally.

Also, lot's of places like gas stations advertise wholesale milk prices, would Costco be selling at less than wholesale?

I'd be curious about their price of milk as well. We buy a 4L jug of milk every second day - that's just for 3 of us. Depending on the price, it could be a huge saving for a large family.
